Gross motor activities/larger muscle coordination

            GROSS MOTOR ACTIVITIES

Having discussed fine motor skills in my previous blog posts,  now let me focus on gross motor activities for larger muscle coordination, which is an integral part of the overall development of a child.

In today's world, most of the parents are working couples who want to send their kids to English medium schools to  maintain their status in the society. They want their kids to be fluent in English, to become a doctor/engineer. And these expectations force them to work and earn, leaving their kids with some relatives or other caretakers.  When they return home fully tired, cannot give full attention to their children. They lose patience quickly and give smart phones in their kids' hands to watch any YouTube videos or play games in order to finish eating, so that parents can take rest. In this way, the children get addicted to smartphones. They are no more interested in outdoor activities/games. As a result,  proper physical growth is hampered, social contact is lost. Postures become incorrect.
There should be all round development of the children; physical,  social,  emotional and intellectual.

We must ensure that there is proper growth and development taking place in every aspect of our children's lives.

Children deserve outdoor play. They should be encouraged to participate in different outdoor activities,  such as walking,  running, jumping, swinging, sliding, climbing, riding a bicycle/scooter,  catching and throwing a ball, swimming/splashing in the water.

If we can't afford to pay for or arrange such costly equipments/play sets for our children,  at least we can arrange the activities of water play, sand play, running, skipping,  jumping,  hopping,  throwing and catching a ball,  dancing etc. In this way, their larger muscle coordination can be improved. It's as important as fine motor skills.

Also, you can notice,  children build self esteem, confidence, to participate in extracurricular activities. They don't hesitate to perform before a large audience,  on occasions like Annual Day, Grandparents Day, etc.
In this way,  they become smarter and more active, which in turn will help them in their future.

Piaget's theory- Stages of cognitive Development

What is cognition?  Well, the dictionary meaning of cognition is the art of knowing. Usually it is concerned with knowing, understanding, processing and using the information and these are considered as mental abilities or components of intelligence. Cognitive development refers to the stages and processes involved in child's intellectual development. There are several theories of development of cognition. Among all the theories, Piaget's theory provides a comprehensive picture of cognitive development from birth to the age of 14 or 15 when cognitive development attains the peak. Piaget conceives of cognitive development as consisting of a series of stages, each characterized by certain kinds of behaviors  and certain way of thinking and solving problems. The descriptions of the characteristics of the child's behavior at each stage can be valuable in helping a teacher to understand the students's level of cognition.
